Graflex Prices

Blog Post

I wanted to take a moment and talk about the astronomical prices of the Graflex camera flash. As most know, this 1940's camera flash handle was the base for the Luke Skywalker lightsaber used in Star Wars. These technically shouldn't cost more than $50 but because of the demand, they have hit a premium. With that said; how much should YOU pay?! I have an answer for that if you are in the market for one; but first, let's go through a short list to see what you should get.

  • First - ask yourself, is this really something you want to do?
    • This is antique, how do you feel about drilling holes?
  • Second - do you really care about authenticity?
    • They make replicas of these that are almost indistinguishable from the real thing.
    • Only a sharp trained eye can tell the difference. See links below.
  • Lastly - are you looking for something for a shelf collection or to play with?
    • They make really good toy versions that light up and make noise.
    • There are also really nice prop replicas, already built if you care about a display case.

Okay, with all that out of the way let's quickly talk about some of the versions out there. There is the 2-Cell flash, which is shorter (they hold 2 D-Cell batteries) - these are the ones you will find a lot. Most sellers don't care that they are selling the incorrect length and they are banking on the fact that you don't know the difference. If you get one of these you will need to get either the bottom of a 3-Cell or a replica bottom of a 3-Cell to complete your build. This may be a good option for a lot of people because by getting a replica bottom you won't have to worry about destroying an antique. Do not pay more than $250 US for these - and make sure that the red button is included as well. A lot of eBay sellers are trying to get upwards of $350 for these (see above), it is absolutely ridiculous. Do not pay it- wait and look around, I guarantee you will find one cheaper.

Now, on to the 3-Cell. There are two different Graflex 3-Cell versions that we care about. It all has to do with what is stamped on the bottom.

They are both correct- the "New York" Version has a tie to the Empire Strikes Back "Wampa" scene and because it is older and pre-US patent they are harder to find. This version of the 3-Cell also has a different red button, it's hard to tell, but expect to pay more than $500 US- probably upwards of $1,200.

Finally, the standard 3-Cell.

Be careful, like the description in the photo above. It says "New York"- but guess what? this one is a standard N.Y. version.  (Unless the original Graflex camera is included as well) Do not pay more than $350 US for one of these. I paid $299 for mine in 2020. There is no reason to pay these prices, it just jacks up the price for everyone. Let these sellers post on eBay for several months unsold.
